What is a Pessary?

Getting Fit for a Vaginal Pessary

When is a Pessary NOT Recommended?

A pessary can be an excellent solution for those who don’t want to get surgery for their prolapse symptoms. However, there are circumstances where a pessary may not be a good idea for you. These include: 

  • You have an active or recurring UTI, yeast infection, or other pelvic inflammatory condition.

  • You cannot schedule consistent follow-up visits with your healthcare provider.

  • You don’t feel comfortable inserting and removing your pessary on your own.

  • You are allergic to silicone.

Is a Pessary Right for Me? 

A vaginal pessary can be an excellent option if: 

  • You’re dealing with pelvic organ prolapse and want relief from symptoms like pressure, bulging, or leaking.

How Do I Care for My Vaginal Pessary?**

  • Remove your pessary every two to three days and wash it with warm water and soap. Then, let it fully dry before reinserting it.

  • It’s recommended to schedule follow-up visits with your provider every 6-12 months.

  • Pessaries are removable, so you can take them out as desired. Some women remove their pessary at night and reinsert it in the morning. Pessaries can also be removed for intercourse.

  • Inserting, removing, and using a pessary should be comfortable and pain free.
